about

Artist/Tutor, Julie Herring

Julie Herring started studying Art in her mid-twenties, originally in Natural History Illustration, then Fine Art painting and later achieving a Masters of Art in Museum Studies (which included ‘Collections Management’). She also studied short courses (City & Guilds) in Silver-smithing and Jewellery Design; Ceramics and Ceramic Design; and Printmaking.

In April 2014, Julie left full-time employment to re-establish her own art practice and working studio. With over 20 years’ experience of Gallery education, managing and curating Public Art exhibitions and displays at Bournemouth University, Julie is now a freelance Artist/Tutor and Curator.

For many years Julie was based at earth studio in Ashley Cross, Lower Parkstone, Poole. Since July 2017, she has created a new studio and classroom in Furzebrook Road (between Wareham and Corfe in Purbeck), based within the beautiful Stoborough heathland.

From her new ‘earth art & design studio’ she is running Adult Drawing, Painting and Printmaking courses. Julie teaches and encourages observational drawing skills, inspired from nature. The setting is ideal for indoor classes and enables outdoor drawing, with beautiful walks just on the doorstep. Outdoor classes enable looking closer at nature and the Dorset landscapes.

The courses are small and friendly, a healthy activity that is also sociable and enjoyable for all (adult) ages and abilities.

For many years, Julie has also been building up a personal collection, now used for teaching. Her interest has always been in natural forms, designs and patterns in nature, and handcrafted arts and crafts. Her Art Collections includes studio pottery, art glass, paintings, printmaking, natural jewellery and decorative arts.
